Diaconate Milestone
From zero permanent deacons in 1968, the permanent diaconate has flourished as a vocation as part of the spiritual renewal desired by the Second Vatican Council. Today there are over 18,000 deacons in the U.S. who are ordained in service to the Word, Charity and Liturgy on behalf of their local ordinaries. Deacons foster spiritual renewal among their families, in their workplaces and in their parish communities.
